SUCCESSES - Using Interactive Imagery to achieve career goalsA stay at home mom uses career coaching to gain confidence and become successful at a return to the business world. SITUATIONBetsy experienced ambivalence about returning to work in the business world after a twelve year absence during which she had stayed home to raise her three kids. Now that her children were more independent, she wished for the intellectual stimulation and adult contact her professional career had given her. Besides, the family could use the money. Betsy was apprehensive, however, about whether she could become successful in corporate culture. She was concerned about leaving her children and insecure about reentering the world of business after having been out of touch for so long. She turned to career coaching to help resolve her ambivalence and become successful at moving ahead with her plans. LIFE COACHING APPROACHWe used Interactive Imagery , to take career coaching to a deeper level, allowing Betsy to connect deeply with her inner wisdom for advice. When we asked for help, what appeared was a Fish in a glass fish bowl. The Fish informed Betsy that it wanted to be set free to swim in a nearby pond. Betsy was ambivalent about doing this. On the one hand, she recognized that the Fish had outgrown its bowl. On the other hand, she was apprehensive about the dangers of releasing the Fish into the unprotected environment of the pond. The Fish suggested that Betsy try putting it in the pond together with the fishbowl. This alternative felt more comfortable to Betsy so she did so. She was astonished to witness the Fish swim off with the bowl following it everywhere it went, suspended just a little below it. Any time there was the sense of danger, the Fish was able to drop back down into the bowl for protection. It became apparent to Betsy that there was a part of her eager for the challenge of returning to a "bigger pond" and confident of her ability to become successful in this new environment. This example illustrates the remarkable creativity inherent in Interactive Imagery. RESULTSCareer coaching supported by Interactive Imagery empowered Betsy to acheive her goals.
