SUCCESSES - Using Life Coaching to Improve Time Management and Develop Leadership Skills

A Director in a pharmaceutical company turns a chaotic department into an effective and efficient team, and uses improved time management to become a strategic leader.

SITUATION

Ed, the Director of a department of about 25 people was suffering from stress caused by endlessly putting out fires in his department. Because Ed’s volatility made some of those around him hesitant to bring problems to his attention, he would learn of issues only when they had become crises.

Constant interruptions, distractions and crises prevented him from addressing larger strategic issues . Ed’s time management problems were exacerbated by his habit of micromanaging.

Ed sought life coaching to improve his time management and to develop his leadership skills in order to become a more strategic manager.

LIFE COACHING APPROACH

  • We used Solution Focused Coaching to help Ed identify the most effective ways to improve his leadership skills and supported him as he implemented his plans.
  • Ed instituted a policy of identifying a specific weekly time when employees could bring their problems to him. Eliminating interruptions improved time management while encouraging his staff to solve most challenges on their own.
  • The regularly scheduled meetings Ed established made information exchange among people in his department more systematic and efficient, leading to fewer misunderstandings. Issues become clarified before they developed into crises.
  • Ed learned ways to calm himself before reacting, enabling him to handle situations strategically.

RESULTS

With time and energy freed up from crisis management, Ed addresses the broader strategic issues in his department. He enjoys his job more and has moved his department to higher levels of performance

Ed made good use of life coaching and rightly derives deep satisfaction from the changes he has made, changes that benefit himself, his group and the organization.

  • Ed now manages strategically. He deals with problems systematically rather than reacting instantly to issues as they arise.

Ed handles his stress and pauses before reacting. Taking the time to collect sufficient information before responding to an upset employee or confronting someone about a problem enables him to act more strategically and make better decisions. Information flow has improved because Ed responds calmly when problems are brought to him.

  • As Ed’s leadership skills have improved, efficiency and productivity have replaced the atmosphere of crisis which used to characterize his department. Ed achieved a better balance between his work and personal life
    • As Ed has improved his time management and leadership skills, others in his group have modeled themselves after him.
    • Rather than wait for their time to talk with Ed about problems, employees solve them on their own.
    • Employees feel increasingly empowered and have taken on greater responsibility.
  • Collaboration among staff has improved
    • Information exchange among people in his department is more systematized and efficient.
    • Fewer misunderstandings occur and issues become clarified before crises develop.
  • Recognizing the improvement in his staff’s performance, Ed no longer micromanages.
    • Ed feels comfortable delegating, freeing up time to address strategic issues in his department.
    • This has led to a marked improvement in employee morale and improved time management for Ed.
