SUCCESSES - Achieving goals while creating better work/life balance through improved time management

A consultant in materials science uses life coaching to develop time management skills and successfully prepare for a major presentation, while restoring balance to his life.

SITUATION

Richard, a consultant in materials science, had contracted with an Institute to offer a two day training providing continuing education units for professionals in his field. Preparing the lectures was a major challenge for Richard and he was very seriously behind schedule. In fact, time management was such a problem that when he initiated life coaching it was uncertain whether he could possibly get the job done on time.

Richard got stuck for hours trying to get each slide in his PowerPoint presentation just right. He also got sidetracked into reading the articles that he was collecting for his bibliography, fearful that he might miss some material that should be included in his talk. He worked to exhaustion most days and felt guilty any time he was not devoting himself to the task. He desperately needed to learn time management skills if he was going deliver his presentation on time

LIFE COACHING APPROACH

Through Solution Focused Coaching we helped Richard identify his issues, clarify his goals, and develop a plan of action.

First we helped Richard determine a realistic schedule. By clarifying exactly when he needed to submit his material to the Institute for duplication, Richard learned precisely how much time was available, eliminating much of the panic he had been experiencing

Next, we helped Richard experiment with several time schedules until he came up with the one that worked best for him. Once he completed the time allotted to work he was free to engage in activities that helped him relieve his stress and was able to do so without guilt. Improvement in time management enabled Richard to work more effectively and efficiently while helping him achieve a better balance between work and personal life.

Finally, we helped Richard develop techniques to move beyond staying stuck. If he got stuck on a particular slide he learned to abandon the slide temporarily, moving on to another where he could work effectively. By cycling through the slides in this way, he was able to get into a flow that carried him through his work efficiently and successfully.

Richard’s experience illustrates aspects of life coaching that can be extremely powerful:

  • Not infrequently, the interventions seem simple and straightforward. The impact of life coaching is often found in the act of taking the time to step back and get perspective on the situation, evaluating objectively the best way to tackle the task and creating a structure that supports successful completion.
  • Having someone there to account to, to cheer your successes and support you through difficult moments can be extremely important in helping you achieve your goals.

RESULTS

Improved Time Management enabled Richard to achieve his goals while creating a better work/life balance.

  • Richard got his presentation prepared in time.
  • The course was such a success that he was invited back to teach this course in an expanded format as well as other courses.
  • Richard reestablished the balance between work and recreation in his life, which ultimately enabled him to work much more effectively on the project.
