SUCCESSES - Improved Leadership Skills lead to promotion

A regional Director of International Marketing in a manufacturing company used career coaching to better handle her boss, improve her leadership skills and earn a much sought after promotion.

SITUATION

A regional Director, Paula was eager to advance into Corporate. Several things stood in the way of achieving her goal.

Her relationship with her manager was a source of serious concern. Paula's discomfort with her manager's unpredictability and negativity often left her anxious and ineffective in his presence. Her difficulty approaching her boss made it difficult for Paula to gain clarity on just how she was viewed and what her opportunities for advancement really were.

Deficits in Paula’s leadership skills also created problems. Paula’s emotional reactivity was an issue. Because of her temper, her direct reports avoided bringing problems to her attention until they had become crises. She also tended to micro-manage. In addition, Paula’s retention of several underperforming employees undermined the productivity in her department.

Paula also recognized the need to improve her presentation style if she wanted to move ahead in the organization. She identified her lack of confidence in public speaking, together with a lack of preparation and organization as areas in need of improvement.

Paula wanted to get ahead. She sought career coaching to improve her leadership skills and achieve her goals.  

CAREER COACHING APPROACH

Solution Focused Coaching was used to help Paula improve her leadership skills. At the outset, Paula learned relaxation techniques that helped her deal more effectively with her manager, as well as those in her department. By applying these techniques she is able to

  • Respond more calmly when upset
  • Eliminate non-strategic behavior by pausing to consider her response before reacting
  • Improved productivity in her department through improved relationships with her manager and those reporting to her.

Improvement in Paula’s leadership skills led to measurable gains in her department’s performance. Through career coaching Paula

  • Replaced underperforming employees, increasing her department's productivity
  • Established regular meetings resulting in
    • improved information flow
    • reduction in the number and severity of crises
  • Has given others in her department greater responsibility which has
    • contributed to their development
    • freed her from micromanaging. Paula now focuses on strategic issue in her department while her staff handles day to day operations.

RESULTS

Improved leadership skills led to promotion 

Paula was recommended by her manager for two different positions in Corporate. The improvement in her performance, confidence and presentation style helped her get the job she wanted. Since that time, Paula has been promoted again to the VP level. The excellent use she made of career coaching enabled Paula to not only achieve, but exceed her goals.
