SUCCESSES - Using Career Coaching to gain confidence in decision makingSITUATIONTheresa had received two attractive job offers. She was having difficulty deciding whether to go with an offer from a large corporation or a start-up company. While the position at the smaller company was more exciting, challenging and ultimately offered the potential for greater career advancement, the greater stability of the larger organization with its more certain future and better benefits presented a safer alternative. Theresa was a single mom with a daughter in college and a son in high
school. Though she received financial support from her ex-husband, this
would end when her son left home. Theresa was expected to help with the
cost of college for her two children. She recognized that this job change
would probably be the final transition of her career. Would she blaze
ahead in an exciting move or sail safely into retirement? Theresa sought
career coaching to help with her decision making. CAREER COACHING APPROACHIntuition Coaching is extremely helpful when you are facing a choice between two options. A different image can be invited to represent each of the options. Comparing these images provides perspective and clarity which can greatly facilitate the decision making process. We asked for an image to present itself for each of Theresa’s job options. We asked first for an image representing the start-up company. What appeared was a Windsurfer. Theresa sensed the exhilaration of speeding along the surface of the water before a stiff wind. She was also aware, however, of the uncomfortable feeling of being very exposed and the very real danger of tipping over into the water, which looked pretty cold. We then asked for an image for the corporate position. A stately Yacht
appeared, well appointed, sailing steadily into the sunset. At the helm
of this vessel, Theresa felt a sense of security and confidence. It wasn’t
exciting, but Theresa knew she would arrive safely at her destination. RESULTSThrough Career Coaching supported by Intuition Coaching Theresa gained the confidence to make an important career decision On the basis of this experience, Theresa chose the position at the corporation. The wisdom of her choice was confirmed when a year and a half later she read of the demise of the start-up company she had considered joining.
